Top Fish Species at Kleifarvatn
Brown Trout
Known for its healthy population of brown trout, Lake Kleifarvatn offers an uncrowded and rewarding fishing experience.
Kleifarvatn is well regarded for its 3–5 lb brown trout, and uniquely, the lake has no history of netting, which helps maintain strong fish stocks. There are no limits on rods per day, making it ideal for both casual anglers and dedicated fishermen looking to explore new waters.
Best Fishing Spot
The lake varies in temperature, and you’ll have the best chance of catching something if you stick to the southern part of the lake shore as that’s where the hot spring has greatest impact.
Arctic Char
Anglers have a chance of catching strong, healthy Arctic char.
The clear, cold waters and lack of netting in the lake system help maintain excellent fish quality. Using flies, worms, or small lures, visitors can enjoy consistent opportunities for Arctic char throughout the fishing season from May to September.
How to catch Arctic Char at Kleifarvatn?
When targeting Arctic char at Kleifarvatn, focus on fishing during calm, overcast conditions when char tend to feed closer to shore. Light spinning gear or a 5–6 weight fly rod works well, paired with small spoons, spinners, or subtle flies such as nymphs and streamers. Char often hold deeper than brown trout, so allow your lure or fly to sink before retrieving with slow, steady movement.
Early season (May–June) and late season (August–September) are ideal times to find char cruising along drop-offs and cooler inlets. Because the lake system has not been netted, fish are cautious but strong—so use lighter leaders, quiet movements, and longer casts for the best results. Nearby Mjóavatn, included in the same fishing area, also offers excellent chances for larger Arctic char.
